Zero Waste America

Zero Waste America is an internet-based research organization, specializing in knowledge on U.S. waste disposal issues. “Zero Waste” is the “recycling of all material back into nature or the marketplace in a manner that protects human health and the environment.”

So what can you do, on the individual level? From their What You Can Do page, try to avoid toxins, mined products, manufactured goods, imports and shopping. Instead, substitute with organic, biodegradable, handmade and local products. plus, try to start making some of your own stuff, such food and clothes.

Now, the “What to Avoid” list. Well, it’s a

lengthy one…so here’s just a sample, but be certain to check their page for the full list.

Things to Avoid:

• Driving a car.
• Any mined product including aluminum, gold, diamonds and baking soda.
• Plastics, synthetics, petroleum-tainted or treated products.
• Outside lawn & garden chemicals, pesticides and fertilizers.
• Bleach.
• Paper products like tissues, napkins, towels and diapers.
• Fluoridated water.
• Dry clean only clothes.
• Air fresheners, perfume, scented candles.
• New homes.
• Using your dishwasher (might be a source of significant indoor air pollution).
