I was originally disheartened to prepare out about Obama’s pick of Tom Vilsack for the agency of Agriculture. I would have much rather seen someone that was endorsed by Michael Pollan. Instead the U.S. given a man from the corn belt who supports bio-fuels and is a friend of the GMO-crazed Monsanto. However, there is evidence that Vilsack might produce some good changes while in his position or at the very least, not suck.

Eating Liberally asked progressive, organic, Iowan farmer Denise O’Brien just what she thought of Vilsack and here reply was surprising. He was the first democratic governor to win in Iowa in 40 years. He opened his doors to constituents and their concerns regarding agriculture. Though he

held his ground as more of a centrist than a left-leaning governor, he appointed progressives to critical committees. He additionally created the Iowa Food Policy Council which dealt with Iowa’s food safety, farmer’s markets, WIC programs and food stamps.

O’Brien points out that it’s Vilsack’s ability and willingness to listen to all sides that with produce him a good secretary of agriculture. The next step is to see who Vilsack hires to be on his team. That will tell us a lot abut where the agriculture industry of that country will be headed in the next four years.
