Toronto considering banning coffee cups

September 18, 2008 · Print This Article

The city of Toronto is looking at ways to reduce its landfill rubbish and one target on the list is disposable coffee cups. Proposals are being considered for reducing waste from beverage cups, takeout containers and plastic bags, according to an article in the Toronto Star. Actions on the table include an outright ban, a tax on the items, and deposit-return programs. In deposit-return programs, the seller is responsible for recycling, and the consumer gets a portion of money back whether they turn it in.

The aim of all of that is to

extend the life of the city’s Green Lane landfill. Not surprisingly, these proposals do not have the support of the Retail Council of Canada.

I’m all for incentives to energize humans and retailers to reduce food packaging. But an outright ban on disposable coffee cups? Better manufacture certain you have your reusable cup with you!

What do you think? Would you be for an outright ban on food containers, including disposable coffee cups?
