Toilet talk: Water or wipe?

May 23, 2008 · Print This Article

The only bidets I’ve seen have been in Europe. As a typical American, my interaction with the device was limited to turning the knob and soaking the entire bathroom. There is the argument that bidets are better for the environment than toilet paper so perhaps we should once again look to Europe for greener alternatives.

The purchase of toilet paper requires a trip to the store and in most cases the consumption of

virgin paper wrapped in plastic. The toilet paper thereupon winds its way through the sanitation system to be filtered off and disposed of as solid waste. What whether our use of TP could be decreased considerably with the installation of a bidet? Surely it would be more environmentally friendly in the enlarged run, as distant as you can figure out how to use it.
