Australian Officials: Eat Camel Meat to Save the Environment

December 12, 2008

Believe it or not, the world’s largest wild camel heard isn’t roaming the Sahara — it’s actually surging its way unchecked through the Australian outback. Officials say these feral camels are out of control, damaging the fragile desert ecosystems and wreaking havoc on the very scarce water resources in the region. That’s why they’re encouraging all patriotic Aussies to throw some camel steaks on the barbie to help save the environment.

Just a few months ago, the Australian Kangaroo Meat …

Ireland Recalls All Pork Since Sept 1

December 6, 2008

A toxic substance called PCB has been found in extremely high quantities in pork produced in the country. Sometimes up to 200 times the amount considered safe.

PCB was banned in the Irish Republic in the late-1970s. The compound is used as a coolant and plasticizer and it’s been found to cause fatal liver damage in humans and animals, in addition to rashes and possibly cancer.

It’s unclear at that point how much of the pork was distributed outside of Ireland, and officials say soci…

December 5, 2008

If you have a little one on your list, or even someone young at heart, consider feeding the dolls (and bears, and squirrels, and tigers) that Christmas.

Obama Given List for Sustainable Secretary of Agriculture Nomination

December 5, 2008

There is considerable concern amongst those in the food industry by the fact that Obama has yet to name a Secretary of Agriculture. A group of nearly 90 advocates of sustainable agriculture sent a letter to the president-elect with a list of six suggested names to help him with his choice.

The humans who sent the letter are heavy hitters when it comes to critiquing and revolutionizing the way that we grow and purchase food including Alice Waters, Judy Wicks, and Michael Pollan. We know…

Meeting Puts Spotlight on Gassy Animals

December 4, 2008

187 countries are getting together in Poland to discuss what will replace the Kyoto Protocol which is set to expire in 2012. Farm emissions, particularly from giant factory farms, will be one of the big issues on the table. The UN has released figures that point to agriculture, along with transportation, as being among the most “problematic” sectors related to global warming.

Farm animals have always been, as this NYT piece calls them, “living smokestacks”. But as the global consumpti…

Organic Chickens are fed Melamine

December 3, 2008

The melamine scare seems to be working its way into another food group and just considering you eat only organic food does not prepare you safe. Organic Chicken farmers in France have discovered that the soy feed eaten by their flocks has been tainted with melamine.

300 tons of soy meal imported from China tested 50 times higher than the maximum limit of acceptable melamine. considering of that, it is plausible to think that organic meat is contaminated with melamine as well and anyone…

Mission Playground

December 3, 2008

When a company states right off the bat, “The earth is our playground; our mission is to preserve it,” you know they’re on to something. I like types that skip the talk about how luxurious and exclusive their gorgeous designer organic clothes are, and get right to what’s urgent — living sustainably.

Mission Playground is a clothing company that’s hit the nail on the head with their mission statement. Not only that, but their garments are cute and look very high quality. When a company …
