Streetfilms: Bike-thru banking has arrived

October 10, 2008

If you tend to take your bike for light-duty errands around town, thereupon you’ve probably been through at least one drive-thru banking experience on two wheels. I have, and I can say from experience that it feels just a bit awkward. Especially when there are humans waiting in a car behind you, laughing and throwing things. Well, here’s some good news for bikers in Boulder, you no longer have to wait in a line of scornful motorists, considering you’ve got your own bike-thru banking lane!

Turning roads into solar collectors

August 19, 2008

The possibilities of creating solar energy from asphalt seem a bit far-fetched, but researchers at Massachusetts’ Worcester Polytechnic Institute are looking into a way to do just that. By discovering the hottest layer of asphalt (it turns out, it’s two inches below the surface), these researchers are trying to find ways to manufacture it even hotter by painting an anti-reflective coating and adding in some highly thermal-conductive quartzite.

How would that help conduct sustainable elect…

Cadillac prices Escalade Hybrid at $71k

August 15, 2008

Ok, let’s see a show of hands for those of us who saw this coming. The term “hybrid” is certainly a buzzword, and despite the fact that Hollywood’s A-list has turned the Prius from a laughable “toy car” to a trendy accessory, they’re still a positive step towards an independence from fossil fuels. Right?

Well, that is starting to change as giant SUVs are now getting the hybrid badge. A perfect example of that is the new Cadillac Escalade Hybrid, priced at $71,685. that is a $3600 leap abo…

London’s congestion charge fails to bust up gridlock

August 7, 2008

When former mayor Ken Livingstone’s £8-a-day congestion charge was passed back in 2003, it was considered to be one of his greatest achievements, and clean air activists across the UK smiled. At first, the new fees did seem to ease the traffic moving through the congestion zone. Now, studies are finding that the measure has actually managed to somehow slow down the pace of traffic through central London.

Here’s the good news: according to London’s transport authorities, about 100,000 few…

A revolution in renewable energy: Daniel Nocera’s magic bullet

August 1, 2008

If you ask experts about the reason that solar capability is unrealistic, you will generally construct out the same basic reply: solar capability cannot be easily stored. considering large-scale solar is only cost-effective in a few areas, the inability to efficiently store and transport renders it difficult to use. Added to that, of course, is the fact that solar ability only works when the sun is out, which means that, unless you have effective storage or an address in Arizona, it isn’t all th…

Spain slashes speed limit in global warming overhaul

July 31, 2008

Just yesterday, we found out that they UN is going to turn up the thermostat at its New York HQ in an attempt to save energy. Now, we find that the entire government of Spain is not only cranking down the old thermostat to save some Euros. Not only that, they’re introducing a whole barrage of new measures and restrictions to reduce their nation’s energy consumption.

From now on, all public buildings will no longer be able to set their thermostats below 79°F in the summer, or above 70°F …
