Rising fuel costs mean cheaper organic

September 29, 2008 · Print This Article

Well, here’s an optimistic little tidbit. The Telegraph reports that organic produce may be less expensive than conventional produce in the near future. that is due to the rising cost of oil and the use of fossil fuels on the farm.

Oil is expected to rise to $200 per barrel within the next five to ten years. Fossil fuels are currently used to mine, manufacture and transport fertilizers to the farms and crops. As the price increases, the profit margin decreases meaning that in order to stay afloat, farmers are going to have to

look into new (or old) methods of replenishing nutrients to the soil. Organic farming replenishes the soil with crop rotations and even livestock.

Oil costs rise, conventional farming goes organic, everyone wins.

In actuality, I see conventional farming adopting organic techniques and raising prices, making organic produce more competitive. Perhaps a better way of looking the rising oil costs are that more fresh, local foods will be available in your supermarket and unfortunately for most of us Americans, Bananas will become a luxury item.
