Report: Meat and milk should be rationed for global warming
Milk has managed to work its way into the news a lot in recent days. First, it was the Chinese milk scare. soon after, it was the PETA asking Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream to replace cow’s milk with breast milk. Now, a group of researchers from the University of Surrey’s Food Climate Research Network is saying that we should to limit our consumption to 4 servings of meat and 1 liter of milk per week to avoid a runaway climate change scenario.
Writers of the report hope to inspire more food awareness and
garner support for the type of voluntary rationing that could significantly reduce a population’s overall food-print. Among
these methods are eating local and seasonal foods, walking to the store, and cooking in bulk. The report additionally suggests limiting your intake of food with so-called ‘low nutritional value’ like
sweets and alcohol — although we know that those foods supply an intangible nourishment. Meat, milk, chocolate, and now alcohol…
that’s a lot of rationing to adjust to. I think I like Paul McCartney’s ‘
Meat-free Mondays‘ view better.
