Make the climate count

June 30, 2008 · Print This Article

In a world of greenwashing and false eco-promises, it’s difficult to separate the eco-winners from the eco-losers.

Thankfully, ClimateCounts will help you find and support companies that have the Earth’s interest in mind. Launched by Stonyfield Farm and Clean Air-Cool Planet, the site encourages consumers to be aware of their purchases and patronize companies with eco-friendly goals.

Companies are labeled as “stuck,” “starting,” or “striding,” and are assigned a score out of 100 depending on their commitment to environmental practices

and based on 22 criteria.

Check out the Scorecard, and you’ll find companies listed under several sectors, including accessories, food products, and electronics. (Um, not surprisingly, Stonyfield Farm tops the list in the “Food Products” category at 78 points. clash of interest, much?).

List-topping companies include Nike, Nestle, Anheuser-Busch, GE, and Proctor and Gamble. But remember, that doesn’t necessarily mean they are environmental stars, it simply means they beat out competitors in their categories.
