Georgia says “no” to coal-powered power

Citing concerns by carbon emissions, a judge in the state of Georgia has halted construction of a new coal-fired capability plant.

The ruling against capability plant builder Dynegy is based on a 2007 Supreme Court judgement which found that carbon dioxide emissions should be treated as pollutants. The judge in the Georgia case ruled that construction should not have begun considering

the permit issued by the state set no limit on carbon emissions.

The case is expected to have an impact on other coal-fired plants being planned across the US, which until now haven’t been effectively challenged in the courts.

It’s estimated that 30% of carbon emissions in the US come from coal-powered electrical plants.
