January 9, 2009 · Print This Article

At a instance when many legislators are busy making a case for why we should ban playing with our high tech gizmos while we drive, there are signs that some of them could eventually help reduce some carbon emissions. Although right now it’s estimated that most commuters lose 20 hours a year to talking drivers — Garmin has a plan to offset some of that poor mojo. Soon, your Garmin receiver will be able recommend routes based on fuel consumption.

The software is called ecoRoute, and it will be available to all Garmin nüvi

users who wish to receive fuel saving tips while in route to their destination. From now on, in addition to the “faster time” and “shorter distance” options, Garmin users can now choose “less fuel.” Just input your vehicle type, fuel economy, and local gas prices, your Garmin will be able to calculate just precisely how much you’ll be able to save by taking the ecoRoute. Pretty awesome huh?
