Climate study: Refugees move to thawed Antarctica in 2030

What kind of impact might climate change have by the next two decades? A think-tank made up of the UK’s Forum for the Future and Hewlett-Packard Labs recently completed a “study” where they sought to come up with some radical visions of what 2030 might look like. For those of you who love alarmist predictions, you’ll like what they came up with — because their version of the future definitely qualifies as extremist.

The think-tank came up with some highly controversial prophecies such as: the abandonment of Australia and

Oklahoma considering they’re too dry, climate refugees fleeing to Antarctica, and — perhaps even more unbelievable — Americans adopting a 25 hour work week. Other predictions include athletes competing from home in a “virtual Olympics” and electric appliances that immediately shut down when a home has exceeded its energy quota.

While I applaud their creativity, I sometimes wonder whether these climate change “think-tanks” get caught in the moment and forget that they’re not writing a B-movie screenplay. Don’t these predictions sound like they’d invent a great eco-thriller?
