EV Watch: Tom Hanks Talks About his All Electric Scion

December 15, 2008

If you’ve seen Who Killed the Electric Car, next you know that Tom Hanks was one of the EV1’s biggest fans back when GM was leasing the beloved green rides out to celebrities. Now, he’s back on the bandwagon promoting a new lengthy range electric car company. Early in 2007, Hanks was the first customer to walk away with one of AC Propulsion’s gas-free conversions, now he’s a true believer. He even claims that his electric Scion Xb is favorite vehicle.

What gives AC Propulsion an edge is t…

Jay Leno’s carport Is Green

December 14, 2008

Is it an environmental sin to own a fleet of vehicles and a 17,000 square foot carport whether you heat, cool, light and clean it in environmentally sound ways? whether you’re the king of late night television and have a fascination with cars of all kinds, soon after that carport could not better match your social consciousness with your love of loud mechanical stuff.

Jay Leno let the Los Angeles Times take a look around his garage, the green parts anyway. Solar panels on the roof heat …

Boulder Awarded Platinum Bike Status

December 14, 2008

by the past year, there’s been no shortage of exciting green news coming out of Boulder, CO. Aside from being the first city to shoot for a zero-waste football stadium, the city has been hard at work building one of the most bicycle-friendly traffic infrastructures in the nation, and it appears that their hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed. The League of American Bicyclists has awarded Boulder with “Platinum Bike Status” — one of only 3 cities in the US.

With 381 miles of bikeways, contraflow b…

Biking the World Over

December 13, 2008

I must confess, I needed to write some good news today. I found plenty of poor news to tell you about, more than I am willing to share. The Bush Administration changed rules on hazardous waste, on air pollution, on endangered species, all of which environmental groups decry. But right now, it’s the holiday season and I need some cheer.

Ladies and gentlemen, let’s remember how many bike paths there are in Colombia. Commissioner of Parks, Sports and Recreation for the city of Bogotá, Guillermo…

The Bitter Taste of Victory: Demand for Oil Set to Plummet

December 13, 2008

Oil consumption in the US is set to collapse by the next two years, reaching a level we haven’t seen since 1997. That’s according to two reports from the World Bank. It appears that we’re too poor in the US right now to burn as much oil as we used to, so it’s pretty hard to signal it a out and out victory. Still, we’ve been trying to kick our so-called addiction to foreign oil for a towering moment, so I guess that could be perceived by some as progress.

According to the reports, the dema…

Coffee Runs Your Life, Now it Can Run Your Car

December 11, 2008

Forget E85, hemp diesel, or sugar ethanol — researchers say the fuel of the future might be sitting in a mug next to your computer right now. That’s right: coffee diesel. You’re probably thinking, “oh great, another food-based biofuel that’s going to drive up the price of coffee, which I’ll pay any price for considering I’m addicted to caffeine.” At least, that’s what I thought. The good thing about coffee diesel is that it’s made from post consumer coffee, i.e. coffee grounds. Nice.

The Rise and (Perhaps) Fall of the Hummer

December 7, 2008

Remember when Tupac Shakur rapped about his Hummer? Remember when the military willingly gave General Motors $1.3 billion to develop a military truck that would put the Jeep to shame? Remember when a couple of teenage girls flipped their Hummer on the freeway during icy weather? Remember when…

Well, Salon.com has those memories and more as a tribute to the Hummer of yore. The Big Three have pronounced their commitment to fuel efficiency, and GM is “reconsidering” the Hummer type.
