London Mayor to Shrink Congestion Zone

December 1, 2008

over the past few years, London’s city government has really made a name for itself by attacking all sorts of environmental problems with the strongest, no-nonsense legislation they could muster. Now, it looks like some of their attempts to ‘take strong action’ may have done so against the wishes of Londoners. A recent poll of London’s notably green-minded electorate shows that an overwhelming majority are opposed to expanding the city’s infamous congestion zone.

Former mayor and champion of…

Missouri Gas Stations Ditch Ethanol to Lower Gas Prices

December 1, 2008

Remember how last year ethanol was all the rage, considering it reduced vehicle emissions, helped slash gas prices, and reduce our dependence on foreign oil. thereupon the news got out that corn-based biofuels brought with them tons of nasty side effects like food shortages and ocean dead zones… Well now that gas prices are back down, there’s a new and inconvenient truth that’s upsetting the applecart for ethanol producers — ethanol is actually more expensive than regular gas.

For the las…

Green benefits of the $700 billion bailout plan

October 13, 2008

Whether you think the government spending $700 billion to bailout financial institutions is a good concept or a poor concept, there are some nice little green perks as part of the bill that you may not have heard about.

The Bicycle Commuter Act will give a $20 per month tax credit to employers of bicycling commuters to go towards adding infrastructure items like bike racks and lockers rooms. Hopefully some companies will use that to energize two-wheeled commuting.
The transportation an…

Podcar offers public transportation with the privacy of a car

October 13, 2008

A group of rapid transit enthusiasts in Ithaca, NY are politicking for a new kind of public transportation system that I’ve never even heard of before. Forget the bus, the subway, or the light rail, these guys want to take public transit to the next level: the podcar. These computerized, driver-less pods would give 2-10 passengers the comfort and autonomy of an automobile, while running on an electrical current produced by clean energy.

From what I can tell, these pods would travel on eit…

EcoDriving USA

October 13, 2008

EcoDriving USA, brought to you by the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, actually has some good driving tips to offer, in an effort to help reduce the impact of your driving.

Avoid rapid starts and stops.
Keep rolling in traffic: Go “slow and go” instead of stop and go.
Drive steady to hopefully hit the green lights: that one I am not certain on. According to EcoDriving, engineers optimize traffic light timing, so a steady speed can help drivers avoid red lights. It seems to me I …

Keeping up with Neil’s electric car project

September 30, 2008

Some of you may be aware of the fact that Neil Young is converting his favorite gas-hogging 2-ton white ‘59 Lincoln Continental — complete with awesome 50’s tail fins — into an all-electric zero-emissions vehicle. Some of you may even be aware that Neil and his designer John Goodwin almost crashed the unwieldy $120,000 ride on a recent pop quiz drive. Apparently, as that monumental “LincVolt” project continues to chug along, it’s picking up a kind of following of its own.

Now, Neil has app…
