EPA Slips on Perchlorate

January 2, 2009

The EPA made a misstep in its evaluation of the chemical perchlorate, according to a report that came out that week. The report was criticized for failing to consider the effects of perchlorate in tandem with other chemicals on human health.

Perchlorate, which can be found in areas where jet fuel residue has accumulated, potentially blocks the uptake of iodide by the body. Iodide is added to most of the world’s table salt to prevent iodine deficiency, which can cause goiters as well as me…

Bad News for Squirrels: Acorn Trees go on Strike

December 16, 2008

What’s a squirrel have to do to get a nut these days? That’s what acorn crop watchers are starting to ask as oak trees in Virginia, New England, and Nova Scotia have mysteriously failed to produce a harvest that year. Apparently, officials in assured parts of the country have been getting all kinds of strange reports about squirrels digging through trash, hammering bird feeders, and devouring pumpkins. And all signs seem to point towards a weak crop of acorns.

All sorts of amateur botanis…

UPS Will Haul Holiday Packages by Bike

December 15, 2008

When it comes to the parcel delivery business — a field I was once involved in — a healthy business involves a tricky balancing act amidst fuel costs, volume and friendliness. During the holidays, everything you thought you knew goes out the window. That’s why it’s so cool to see UPS trying something new to green their model, reduce costs, and cut down on some of the stress that can turn previously friendly delivery folks into zombie-like holiday haters.

UPS is hiring seasonal bike deli…

Factory Farms Stink

December 15, 2008

Ever wondered about the environmental implications of your Christmas ham? Many porkers in the U.S. are grown in facilities with thousands of animals. Putting that many of pigs in one place sometimes makes the pigs and the humans around them unhappy, particularly considering of the waste they produce. Following this report released by the Natural Resources Defense Council, I spoke with registered nurse Barb Kalbach about her work trying to clean up factory farms. Barb works and lives in Iowa,…

Cutbacks to Air, Water Monitoring Programs

December 12, 2008

Earlier that month, the Natural Resources Defense Council released a report on cuts to health and environmental monitoring programs made during the reign of the Bush administration.

The report, which can be found here, discusses funding cuts made in monitoring things like air quality, water quality, and food quality. Levels of chemicals in these areas are urgent by themselves, but, says report author Miriam Rotkin-Ellman, they additionally act as green lights for larger cleanup efforts. F…

Heineken’s Dream Becomes a Reality in Thailand: A Beer Bottle Building

December 11, 2008

In the early 1960’s, during a vacation in the Caribbean, one of Heineken’s brewers noticed two major problems: the beaches were covered with discarded beer bottles and the citizens didn’t have reasonably-priced building materials. Seeking to kill two birds with one stone, Heineken created the “world bottle” (WOBO), plus known as “the brick that holds beer.” Basically a rectangular-shaped beer bottle, world bottles were designed to fit comfortably end-to-end, making it possible to construct w…
