Carol Browner Named Obama’s Climate Czar

December 16, 2008

Yesterday Obama named Carol Browner to fill the newly created position of White House coordinator of energy and climate policy. whether that sounds a little vague to you, don’t feel poor. There’s a great deal of uncertainty about just how much capability Browner will have.

Carol Browner, who served as the head of the EPA during the Clinton Administration, is currently chair of the Audubon Society and a founding member of the Albright Group. She has a lengthy record of supporting change to…

Bill Clinton, T. Boone Pickens Launch Energy Efficiency Campaigns

December 16, 2008

Is it a sign of the times? Instead of talking up expensive new renewable energy projects, it seems that a few of the leading voices in the renewable energy movement have shifted the attentions to more recession-friendly projects. Perhaps meaning to coincide with the President Elect’s upcoming energy program, both Bill Clinton and T. Boone Pickens announced plans to start improving energy efficiency in buildings.

On Saturday, Clinton announced that the Clinton Global Initiative and his hom…

Al Gore Endorses 350.org

December 15, 2008

The climate talks in Poznan got mixed reviews — for some the steps being discussed are too timid and tepid. But last Friday Al Gore gave a rousing speech declaring that new guidelines must aim to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to 350 parts per million.

This is an aggressive goal — even 450 parts per million is considered a stretch — and Big Al’s endorsement delighted the folks at 350.org. As their name implies, the group believes the only way to reverse clima…

Paper Shredder Recycles in the Office

December 15, 2008

Office paper goes can go lot of miles — even more whether it’s recycled. First it is delivered to the office where it is relinquished to the recycling bin. soon after it travels to a local recycling center and perhaps even a regional one before it arrives at the plant where it is broken down and turned bank into a blank sheet. From there it gets shipped out, repackaged and arrives back at your office. What whether there was a way to recycle the paper right in the workplace? Paper shredder m…

Beacherator: Dubai to Build World’s First Ever Refrigerated Beach

December 15, 2008

It’s no secret that oil rich Dubai has more cash than it knows what to do with, and even though oil prices have crashed by the last few months, Dubai is still moving forward with building projects that redefine the term excess. To go along with the city’s giant indoor ski mountain/shopping mall, condo high rise with 57 swimming pools, Dubai has come up with yet another climate-altering project that thumbs its nose at frugality and common sense: refrigerated beaches.

With summertime highs …

Houston Awards $10,000 to Rice Scientists

December 11, 2008

Back in November I mentioned that the City of Houston was looking for the best way to recycle mounds of debris caused by Hurricane Ike. Well, it looks like they’ve found a winner! Last Wednesday, scientists and students from Rice University were given $10,000 for their concept to convert the 6.5 million cubic yards of debris into “biomass charcoal.”

The notion is to heat the debris in a bioreactor or kiln up to 500 degrees Celsius with little oxygen to create charcoal. The material can ne…

Log Jam for Eco Activists and Beavers

December 9, 2008

Ok Magazine reports that some environmental activists found an illegal logging site in a scenic part of Poland. Illegal logging is a real threat to old-growth forests around the world. In that case, observers noted that the site restricted some aly felled trees, and some that had been chipped away at for later felling. They reported the travesty only to later find out that the logging was done by beavers.

Guess the beavers didn’t get the notice that that area was off limits. Dam.
