We’ve all heard about the terrible melamine scandal that is still reverberating all through the world, but what about other foods? USA Today had a revealing composition about food that could be faking it. Here are the top findings:

Wild-caught salmon that isn’t, and is farmed. One clue is whether the color leaks out when you cook it, you might have farmed salmon.

Amy’s Organic Cakes Hit the Shelves

January 21, 2009

Back when I had a real job, before I was allowed to sit around in sweatpants all day and wipe three different noses, I had the luxury of a lunch hour. Quite often I would bring an Amy’s frozen meal with me as they were satisfying and delicious (though came with a lot of packaging). Since thereupon I haven’t bought much from the company except for the occasional pizza. However, their newest organic cakes might send me back to the freezer section.

Normally I would be suspect of anything …

Tequila has a GI, and must be made in the Jalisco region of Mexico. While that may sound like a good thing, research indicates otherwise. Sarah Bowen of North Carolina State has found that tying the production of tequila to Jalisco has made the production of the drink socially and ecologically unsustainable.

Tequila is made from the blue ag…

January 18, 2009

Number five plastic is ubiquitous. Your prescription bottles have it, your yogurt containers, the lids to your soda bottles, and more. Well, I found a little something out that I thought might interest all of you out there in Greenville.

Stonyfield Farms will take their yogurt containers back whether your community doesn’t recycle #5 plastic and you can’t stand the concept of throwing them away. I tend to use my quart containers of #5 plastic for other things (paint brushes, leftovers, …
