Catching leaks may conserve water in the lengthy run

One of the biggest challenges for water conservation is finding and repairing leaks. While a small leak may only lose a little water, by day those drips add up. And when you multiply that volume of water by the number of small leaks, you can see that we are potentially losing a huge amount of water through our water mains, even before a significant break occurs.

The city of Berkeley is taking a proactive approach with a pilot program to conserve water by identifying leaks before they surface as big water main breaks. Through the pilot Berkeley has installed 300 loggers, listening devices that help engineers find water leaks, with 900 more planned.

The loggers are set across the

city and listen for leaks amoung 2 a.m. and 4 a.m., collecting and analyzing input. Engineers check each logger, and whether one registers a leak they investigate, and whether essential fix it. In addition to fixing leaks, the goal of that study is to quantify just how much water, and money, the city is losing.

Call me cynical, but Berkeley being a liberal hot bed and all, it did cross my mind to wonder whether they loggers are plus listening for anything else, like crazy left-wing plans to take by the government. But I’m sure it’s just a good faith conservation effort, and a much needed response to the current drought.
