The green economy could create “tens of millions” of new jobs

September 30, 2008

With day after day of poor economic news, it was heartening to about a new report from the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), Green Jobs: Towards Decent work in a Sustainable, Low-Carbon World.

UNEP reports that efforts to curb the climate change are aly creating new, green jobs in both developed and developing world economies, and project that that trend will continue, growing stronger as the industries mature.

The report defines “green” jobs as ones that “reduce t…

Green Your Rental — Eco Furnishings

September 30, 2008

With home ownership climbing out of reach, going green at home
increasingly means finding ways to conserve resources that won’t get
tenants in hot water with property owners. Want to green your rental?
Here’s how to get started.

Tip #2: Opt for vintage and second-hand furnishings by big-box buys

You’ve signed your lease, packed your boxes (recycled, of course), and possibly pulled a muscle or two moving into your new place. Now, Ikea! With so many of your apartment dweller’s needs housed unde…

Help find the Lost Ladybugs!

September 30, 2008

Ladybugs are disappearing and scientists at Cornell University aim to find out where they went. In New York State and other parts of the Northeast, the Coccinella ladybug, or C-9 for short, cannot be found. John Losey at Cornell heads up the “Lost Ladybug Project” and aims to find out where these ladies went.

The Lost Ladybug Project is recruiting citizen scientists, particularly children, to search for C-9 and send photos of them to Cornell.”Zeros” are plus vital; whether you look for…

Rob Lowe kills bird - gives up golfing forever

September 30, 2008

For me, golf represents the world’s most frustrating sport and a huge drain on local water resources. For many devoted fans, however, the sport represents the source of some of purest emotional highs — and lows — available in life. Take Rob Lowe for example, at a recent celebrity tournament, one of his famous sand wedge shots managed to strike a goldfinch in mid air and kill it. Things spiraled downhill from there.

Not only had Rob accidentally killed the bird, but it turns out that the go…

A Cleaner, Greener Freezer from Greenpeace and Ben and Jerry’s

September 30, 2008

Even though you hate to think about it, keeping frozen treats like ice cream cold is one of the (so many) human activities that contribute to global warming.

But hang on a minute before you decide to give up all things icy and delicious in order to reduce your carbon foot. Ben and Jerry’s, with the encouragement and help from Greenpeace, are trying out new kind of hydrocarbon freezer that uses a different kind of coolant.

Freezers in the U.S. use the notorious “F” gases that are inc…

COOL: Country of origin labeling goes into effect today

September 30, 2008

A new law goes into effect today, mandating “Country of Origin” labels on whole foods, called the “COOL” law. According to an AP article, the COOL law requires that retailers inform consumers of the country of origin, including the U.S., on raw meats, fish and shellfish, fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables, peanuts, pecans, macadamia nuts and whole ginseng.

However, while a step in the right direction, the labels fall a bit flat in my opinion. Why? There are no labels mandatory for …

September 30, 2008

If you are committed to becoming one of the “V words” or simply looking for ideas for meat free meals, it can be hard to convince the rest of the household to go along with you. Pint-sized picky eaters will turn their noses up at tofu chunks or just about anything that looks unfamiliar.

Fortunately the World Wide Web is there to help. There are plenty of tasty kid-friendly recipes that don’t signal for any animal products what-so-ever.
