How much will you pay to get greener?

July 31, 2008

Talking green and reducing consumption makes me go all eco-warm inside, but the major experiment comes at the checkout counter.

Let’s face it, a lot of “greener” products and services cost more than their non-green competitors. So, how far are we willing to go? Pretty far, according to a survey by GfK Roper Public Affairs & Media and the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies.

Half of Americans would “definitely” or “probably” pay more for a number of greener alternati…

Spain slashes speed limit in global warming overhaul

July 31, 2008

Just yesterday, we found out that they UN is going to turn up the thermostat at its New York HQ in an attempt to save energy. Now, we find that the entire government of Spain is not only cranking down the old thermostat to save some Euros. Not only that, they’re introducing a whole barrage of new measures and restrictions to reduce their nation’s energy consumption.

From now on, all public buildings will no longer be able to set their thermostats below 79°F in the summer, or above 70°F …

Simple steps take away the pressure of going green

July 31, 2008

From the guys who brought hybrid car service to London, comes the very smart Green Tomato kit. Designed to produce it simple for those new to the green way to get started, the kit, which comes in a reusable (and cute!) canvas bag, focuses on four key areas:

heating: radiator panels to reflect the heat away from walls and back into the room
electricity: energy saving low watt lightbulbs
water use: a device to put in your toilet tank to displace water, so less is due to fill the tank

Cash for Clunkers

July 31, 2008

We often think it’s better to keep things for as expanded as possible, but when it come to cars (and appliances and particularly refrigerators), that is not always the case. Sometimes it is the wiser environmental choice to scrap it.

Alan S. Binder, an economics professor at Princeton, has come up with a way to stimulate the economy and improve the environment, a program he calls “Cash for Clunkers,” which he outlines in a recent NY Times Op-Ed.

“Cash for Clunkers” would be a federal p…

July’s Green Challenge: That’s a wrap!

July 31, 2008

Join the Green Challenge every month and manufacture one small change to help the environment. next at the end of the month let us know how you did!

If you’ve been accompanying me on the Green Challenge that month thereupon chances are you are as happy as I am that July is hours from being by. I knew that it would be difficult for me to take four minute showers all month and it was. What kept me committed was how enthusiastic so many of the commenters were about shortening shower times. S…

Greenpeace blockades Kimberly-Clark factory without resorting to nudity

July 31, 2008

Greenpeace is filled with just as many kooks as PETA but sometimes they seem more, shall we say, focused on the actual issues. Last Friday the Kleercut campaigners from Greenpeace blocked the entrance of the Kimberly-Clark factory in Fullerton, CA, to protest their use of virgin and unsustainably managed forests to form toilet paper. And they didn’t bring any naked society with them, at all.

Where PETA would have gone for chaining a bunch of nude hotties to toilets, the Kleercut activists…

California may sue to block Nestle bottled water plant

July 31, 2008

Although the bottled water banfest that gripped the country earlier that year has fizzled, the Attorney General in California is still committed to hunting down the plastic menace like the evil petroleum-based product it is. Attorney General Jerry Brown is threatening to sue Nestle Waters North America unless it calculates the global warming impact of a new project in the mountain town of McCloud.

You might think that the environmental problem would be the 200 million gallons of water Nes…
