Who knew Chris Kattan was…green?

June 30, 2008

People Magazine reported that fey comic actor Chris Kattan married his…girlfriend (Really? I just thought he was…no? Remember Mango? Well, that’s fine, too. Everyone deserves love!) Sunshine Tutt in a beautiful ceremony in Yosemite Valley.

They’ve been together for a few years, so that’s not the big surprise. It was the ecorazzi report that the entire wedding was green! I had no notion that Chris was part of the Hollywood green train, but it’s good to have him on board.

Granted, I …

China bags plastic… bags

June 30, 2008

Yinglin Liu writes at Worldwatch about a the success of a recent government effort to drastically cut the use of plastic bags in China. It seems that in the face of a flat out ban on the bags, society find other ways to carry food and other consumer goods. It might help, too, that plastic bag waste is so prevalent in China that it has its own name: the white pollution. Four different government agencies have worked together on that ban, resulting in a set of guidelines titled the “Administra…

4 day work week: Utah cans casual Fridays

June 30, 2008

Since gas prices began their climb into the upper stratosphere, I’ve been hearing rumors about the rise of the 4-day work week. Until now, I chalked up these rumors to a set of unorganized and optimistic working stiffs — all dreaming of a future without casual Fridays. Now that the state of Utah is in the process of phasing out Fridays, it looks like we might be right in the middle of an honest to goodness 3-day weekend revolution.

Last week, Governor Huntsman rolled out the state’s new …

“Leave No Trace” when outdoors

June 30, 2008

Ever see those obnoxious hikers or campers, you know the ones who bring really loud radios into the woods, and spew their fast food wrappers and used chewing gum all by the place? Actually, I’ve never seen public like that hiking in the woods, considering most outdoor enthusiasts follow a “Leave No Trace” philosophy, whether they know it by name or not!

Leave No Trace is a program to assist outdoor enthusiasts about how to reduce their impact when they spend day outdoors hiking, camping, …

Canada approves 1st trashanol plant

June 30, 2008

As we’ve seen with their dedication to Earth Hour and drive-thru bans, Canada seems willing to do whatever it takes keep one step ahead of it’s carbon footprint. On Friday, officials announced that they’ve struck a deal to turn Edmonton’s refuse into a fuel additive. An ethanol company named Greenfield has teamed up with the governments of Alberta and Edmonton to build a $70M fuel production facility that uses plastic, cardboard, and paper as a feedstock.

Using society’s waste to fill up …

Bees can’t find flowers, seek sweet insect treat

June 30, 2008

The disappearance of undoubtful types of flowers in the UK may be driving bees to a less healthy diet.

The Bumblebee Conservation Trust says that in recent years bees have been spotted feeding off the sugary secretions of aphids rather than the nectar of flowers. The behaviour isn’t new, but researchers are seeing increased incidence of it lately and are speculating that it may be considering there are fewer of the types of flowers that bees have typically used as food sources.

The cha…
